Welcome to my blog called the Tidal Wave of Change™. We need a tidal wave of change in EVERY corner, sector, industry, organization, household and individual can, and many are, collectively contributing to make changes toward a more sustainable world.
Today’s topic is about Sustainable Business Development Trends: An Optimistic Outlook and Predictions for 2021 and Beyond
Firms that embrace missions that go beyond generating a profit can attract more, and better quality, job applicants, according to a study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research. The researchers, who launched a real company and recruited workers via Craigslist in 12 U.S. cities, found that they received a 25% boost in applicants by simply taking on a do-gooder image. More than that, the employees they hired were more productive and were even willing to work for lower pay than those brought on without such messaging.
The 21st century has been called the “Century of the Environment”. Every corner, every sector, every industry, every organization, every household and every individual can, and many are, contributing to make changes toward sustainable development and commit to the Circular Economy.
Consider for your company, the following definition of corporate sustainability from the Symposium on Sustainability Profiles in Leadership” NYC, Oct. 2001: “A company’s ability to achieve its business goals and increase long-term shareholder value by integrating economic, environmental and social opportunities into its business strategies.” This definition continues to mature with the UN’s SDGs 2030 agenda and broadening the three P’s to include Peace and Partnerships, along with Prosperity, Planet and People, the original triple bottom line concept. The circular economy is also a newly evolving approach to ensure a closed loop system that applies sustainable development concepts.
Topline Trends
- You can’t do business on a dead planet.
- The Workforce of the Future is taking center stage where organization’s entire talent lifecycle, culture, sustainability strategy, leadership and work expectations are being shifted in response to the requirements of the conscious generations – Generations Y and Z.
- Quality Job Strategy creates or revises jobs that are more attractive.
- Corporate Social Responsibility has moderate acceptance of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as an organizing framework for the commitments their company will make. CSR is not a “bolt on” concept, it requires innovation, transformation and cultural immersion efforts – which are the greatest challenges.
- No Excuses! Innovation and Collaboration are imperatives for organizations to drive change.
- Sustainable Supply Chains – how to improve the energy efficiency, reduction of carbon footprint, waste management, redesigning packaging to minimize and/or commit to the circular economy for recycling or upcycling.
- Apparel Industry, that has huge potential to drive change in wasteful and harmful manufacturing practices, is stepping up with sustainability commitments.
- Fierce dedication with aggressive commitments by global companies toward net zero goals.
- Leveraging collaborations with suppliers and partnerships to get the highest impact.
- Early revelation is the alignment of GRI and SASB methodology to establish metrics and tracking of sustainability goals and monitoring of target achievements.
- Impact investing with a financial lens for transparency of metrics toward sustainability goals.
Innovation and leading change are essential to “bounce forward”. Climate action is driven by urgency. We have a tidal wave of change in every sector, industry, organization in many countries with a movement to restore our planet and re-balance our social justice systems. Your thoughts and comments are always welcomed.
